Well Woman Exam Q&A

What is a well woman exam?

The well woman exam service at Capital Women’s Care is a comprehensive appointment that is tailored to your individual needs. Depending on your age, sexual habits, and medical history, you may need different services or tests during the exam.

The exam is a chance for your physician to check up on your physical health, reproductive health, mental health, and any other areas of concern. It’s also an ideal time to monitor any changes in weight or lifestyle that might affect your health.

Feel free to speak openly with your physician during this visit, especially on topics such as:

  • Sexual problems
  • Bleeding or pain in your reproductive organs
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Pregnancy planning or tests
  • Vaginal discharge

Even if you’re symptom-free, a well woman exam is recommended once yearly if you’re over the age of 21.

Will I need to have tests?

Once you’re sexually active, you’ll begin to have regular pelvic exams during your well woman visit, as well examinations to screen for cervical and breast cancers.

You can also request birth control or STD testing during your well woman exam. As you approach the age of 40, mammogram referrals may also become a part of this visit.

Other routine tests include a vital sign check and an examination of your skin, abdomen, glands and lymph nodes. If you’re at an age where you need to update your immunizations, your physician can also order these tests as well.

How can I stay healthy at home?

The well woman exam is an important time to check in and strengthen your relationship with your healthcare provider. There are ways you can monitor your health at home, too, to ensure you have an easy visit at your next well woman exam. Your physician might recommend:

  • Breast and skin self-exams. If you’re unsure how to perform a breast self-exam, ask your doctor for instructions.
  • Diet or lifestyle changes. Weight loss or gain can dramatically influence your hormonal and reproductive health.
  • Follow-up test or referrals. Your physician might want you to see a specialist or a different kind of provider.
